Light under a bowl

Matthew 5: 14-16

“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

We have read through these verses hundreds of times. But have you ever wondered how one puts the light under a bowl? Doesn’t that sound like foolishness? But think again, aren’t we all guilty of this?

We put the light under a bowl each time we do not exhibit the light of Jesus. Simply put, when we do not exhibit honesty, kindness, love, gentleness, mercy or integrity, we are hiding the light. We hide it when we do not do the good that we are called to do. Today, let our prayer be that we will shine the light of Jesus. It can be as simple as being kind to a stranger, exhibiting integrity in workplace, turning away from gossiping, lending a helping hand to a neighbor, raising voice against injustice and so on.

Being a light also means to shine at all times: shine through day and night, in happy times and during suffering, at home and at workplace, with friends and with strangers, just SHINE! Let our life, our words and actions, reflect the heart of Jesus. Remember, we are the Bible that the world around us reads. We are called to be the light.
